Bird Watchers Garden of Eden
The truth is that there exists inside coastal Australia a second Australia - of which most of our people know very little...for out here you have reached a core of Australia, the real red Australia of the ages.
C.E.W. Bean 1910

Bird watchers delight in searching the billabongs and water storages along the Darling or northward across salt bush plains and mulga scrub towards the lakes of Currawinya National Park near the village of Hungerford. It is recognized among the most important inland waterbird habitats in Australia. These are the haunts of egrets, herons, black swans, budgerigars, wedge tailed eagles, pelicans, ibis, brolgas, black cockatoos and a hundred other species in surrounding areas such as the recently gazetted Culgoa National Park north east of Bourke.

Mount Oxley is just a short drive out of Bourke. On a clear day it is and idyllic spot. You can perch on the summit, in the craters that Clelland describes, and watch as wedge tailed eagles gliding up the air currents around the cliff top. From the summit you can see that it is a veritable ocean of plain county, spreading as far as the eye can see.
